See Why 'Loving' Is the Early Oscar Contender We Can't Wait For
Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga star in a timely film based on the 1967 Supreme Court ruling in Loving v. Virginia.
Amid the racial tension that boils over in the United States comes a film that explores the blindness of love in a callous world. Based on the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Loving v. Virginia, Loving follows the courtship and marriage of Virginians Mildred Jeter, a black woman, and Richard Loving, a white man. They were arrested and sentenced to prison in 1958, because their interracial marriage violated the state’s anti-miscegenation laws. With love on their side, the two sued the state of Virginia in a series of proceedings leading to the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision that stated laws prohibiting interracial marriage are unconstitutional.
Having competed for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Loving is slated to make its silver screen debut this November 4.
