Disney+ has reportedly canceled Marvel Studios‘ Wonder Man despite formally renewing the series for a second season back in March. The streaming service rescinded its Season 2 order for the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II-led superhero series.
Variety recently received reports from insiders that a writers’ room for the second season was never opened, and the show’s writers have been released to pursue other projects. Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the eight-episode freshman season starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams alongside Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery. Despite earning an Emmy nomination for Abdul-Mateen II and strong critical acclaim, Disney+ ultimately opted not to move forward with production.
While the series will not return for a second installment, sources report that characters featured in Wonder Man could still appear in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects down the line. Abdul-Mateen received an Emmy nomination for his role in this shoe for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series. The show also initially debuted with a 91% critical approval rating.
