Samsung Electronics Posts Record $62 Billion USD Operating Profit Driven by AI Boom

Samsung Electronics has achieved unprecedented financial milestones for the second quarter of 2026. The conglomerate reported a record operating profit of ₩89.5 trillion KRW ($62 billion USD) alongside an all-time high revenue of ₩171.5 trillion KRW ($119 billion USD). This monumental growth stems directly from the ongoing global artificial intelligence boom. Crosstown rival SK Hynix similarly capitalized on the frenzy by posting its own record revenue of ₩60.5 trillion KRW. Together, the two giants control roughly two-thirds of the global memory chip market and are aggressively steering production to meet skyrocketing demand for high-bandwidth memory components.
Despite these historic earnings, both manufacturers saw their stock prices tumble on the volatile South Korean exchange this week. Investors are reportedly growing anxious about the massive capital expenditures required to increase manufacturing capacity. Fears are also mounting over intensifying competition from China following reports of state-owned enterprises mass-producing advanced lithography machines. The recent market debut of Chinese competitor ChangXin Memory Technologies further amplified these anxieties among shareholders.
To mitigate long-term market risks and secure captive demand, Samsung is locking corporate clients into multi-year supply agreements. Corporate representatives indicated that these contracts will secure up to 70 percent of the brand’s total DRAM supply as experts forecast semiconductor shortages persisting through 2028. The strategy aims to shield the chipmaker from future demand fluctuations while guaranteeing major tech entities reliable access to essential AI infrastructure.
Production capabilities are expanding internationally to support this aggressive roadmap. Samsung plans to begin construction on a second semiconductor fabrication plant in Taylor, Texas later this year with a target operational date of 2030. South Korean leadership is also stepping in to cement these tech alliances. President Lee Jae Myung recently traveled to San Francisco alongside executives from Samsung and SK to finalize extensive cooperation agreements with major American industry players like Nvidia and OpenAI.
