The cinematic sensation that took the world by storm is officially stepping out of the screen and onto the live stage. Netflix made a massive announcement for fans of its record-shattering animated feature: KPop Demon Hunters is getting a global concert tour. Teaming up with Los Angeles-based live entertainment powerhouse AEG Presents, the streamer is looking to capitalize on the film’s unprecedented popularity by bringing its beloved characters and chart-topping soundtrack directly to arenas around the world.
Details regarding exactly how the animated hit will be translated into a live arena tour are still largely being kept under wraps. A brief press release promised an unforgettable “live experience that will bring elements of the two-time Oscar-winning film to life in spectacular ways.” However, it remains to be seen how the tour will utilize the film’s star-studded musical cast—which includes EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and REI AMI as the singing voices for the superstar demon-hunting trio, HUNTR/X.
“Obviously, nothing has captured the world’s attention quite like KPop Demon Hunters,” Netflix president of ad sales Amy Reinhard shared with the upfronts audience. “There were sing-a-longs, Halloween costumes, shoutouts at the U.S. Open and Buckingham Palace. There was even a 25% spike in flights booked to Korea.”
Reinhard emphasized that the film remains the most popular movie on Netflix, achieving a staggering 325.1 million views in its first 91 days of streaming. “We’re really excited to announce that next year, in partnership with AEG Presents, we’re going to keep that momentum going with our very first world concert tour,” she continued. “The live tour is going to bring fans even closer to the characters and the music that they love.”
Produced by Sony Animation and directed by Maggie Kang alongside Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, a world-renowned idol group who balance their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as badass demon hunters protecting their fans from supernatural threats.
As Netflix continues to expand its footprint in live, in-person entertainment, a global tour for its most-watched English-language movie of all time feels like a guaranteed blockbuster. Fans eager to see HUNTR/X in the flesh will want to keep a close eye out for official dates and ticketing details, which are expected to drop later this year.
