Vic Mensa‘s socially-conscious records are a refreshing contrast to hip-hop’s lust for women and money, but that doesn’t make him a political rapper. In the wake of dropping his latest EP There’s Alot Going On, the Chicago-born artist was the latest guest to appear on The Breakfast Club to promote his new project and share current updates.
Vic, who does not consider himself a “conscious” rapper, expresses his passion to rap “not just about the club or some Maserati… it’s more so that I try to make music from a place of reality and experience, something that matters to me.” And his music speaks. His latest project alone sheds light on police brutality and the public’s trust issues with the force — as a public servant and law upholder, cops should be invested with a large moral and social responsibility to help citizens, and in Vic’s eyes, that same responsibility should be placed upon artists who can really utilize their positions as public influencers for the greater good.
