An independent designer submitted a 1,026-piece pop-art sculpture recreation to the LEGO Ideas platform

The glossy red build utilizes specialized curved windscreen elements to mimic the smooth lobes of an inflated balloon

A hidden interior compartment depicts the animal as a pressurized industrial vessel operated by minifigures

Contemporary art meets brick engineering with a massive new fan submission on the LEGO Ideas platform. Independent creator brxstr recently unveiled a 1,026-piece homage to the iconic Jeff Koons sculpture. While the Danish toy brand already produces a fingernail-sized balloon dog accessory for carnival sets, this display-ready model scales the concept up to 15 inches long and 12.5 inches tall.

The structural foundation relies on a single specialized part. Piece 5274 is an 8x6x2 curved windscreen that entered the brand palette in 2024. The builder scrapped an earlier iteration of the project to utilize this exact element. Mirroring two of these windscreens together forms a single smooth balloon segment for the legs, body, ears and nose. Tapered tips use a smaller rounded windscreen to close off the ends. Technic angled pieces handle the internal connecting work to keep the skeleton completely hidden. A clever side effect of this construction is the visible plate seams along each lobe mimicking the natural crease lines of over-inflated latex.

Beneath the serene glossy red exterior lies a highly detailed and humorous interior. Lifting the top off the body reveals a pressurized industrial operation. Inside sits a minifigure wearing a yellow hazmat suit with a radiation warning on his chest. This worker stands over a trans-blue gas cylinder equipped with a chrome pipe, a printed gauge panel and a valve wheel. Four official miniature LEGO balloon dogs sit racked up on the wall behind him like lab specimens. A second minifigure occupies the head cavity to steer the vessel.

The Balloon Dog Mk II submission is currently gathering community votes to be considered for production as an official retail set. The designer noted that only two specific parts do not currently exist in the correct red colorway. He also pitched the possibility of future multicolor variants to match the diverse spectrum of the original gallery artworks.
