Sony‘s Screen Gems has officially landed the rights to Mime, an upcoming supernatural horror thriller starring John David Washington. The studio beat out competitive offers from Amazon and Searchlight to secure the feature project.

Nikyatu Jusu, who made her feature directorial debut with the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Nanny, is attached to direct. The screenplay was written by Stephen Herman based on his original spec concept, though specific storyline details are currently being kept under wraps.

The project is produced by Matt Tolmach alongside The Black Phone filmmaker Scott Derrickson via his Crooked Highway banner. Washington will also serve as a producer on the film alongside Tolmach’s partner Camila Grove. Washington previously starred in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, Gareth Edwards’ The Creator, and most recently appeared in the 2024 drama The Piano Lesson.
