Summary

The FIA has proposed a shift to cheaper, simplified V8 turbo hybrid engines for the 2030 or 2031 Formula 1 seasons

New regulations aim to cut the engine budget cap by 50 percent and drop 80kg from overall car weight

The rule set targets 900bhp while resolving current energy starvation issues to prioritize visceral sound and driving challenge

The FIA sent a proposal document to Mercedes, Ferrari, Audi, Honda, Red Bull and Cadillac outlining the framework for the Formula 1 next engine regulations. Slated for introduction in either the 2030 or 2031 seasons, the new rules mandate a shift toward V8 turbo hybrid engines that are simpler and cheaper to manufacture than current power units. Under the proposed parameters, these next-generation power units feature an engine capacity between 2 and 2.3 litres. By streamlining the architecture, the governing body aims to drop 80kg from overall car weight.

This mechanical pivot in the Formula 1 next engine regulations resolves criticism from drivers and manufacturers regarding energy starvation and extreme complexity. The new design relies on a smaller turbo running at reduced boost pressure, paired with a less powerful hybrid system. Specifically, the electrical motor’s recovery capacity drops from 350kW to 200kW. Under this distribution, 100kW (134bhp) of electrical power remains continuously available to the driver, while a secondary 100kW is reserved for an overtake mode. The internal combustion engine generates the remainder of the power, targeting roughly 900bhp. Rebalancing the power output aims to elevate the driving challenge and return a visceral sound to the track while maintaining road relevance.

To achieve this simplified hardware, the document outlines two potential manufacturing pathways. One proposed method involves creating a 2.1-litre V8 by adding two cylinders to current 1.6-litre engine blocks while downsizing both the turbo and the MGU-K. Alternatively, a second option suggests using an external manufacturer to design a standardized baseline power unit. Current manufacturers push back against standardizing power units, preferring to build bespoke engines. Regardless of the path chosen, Formula 1 will continue to mandate fully sustainable fuels with streamlined requirements to cut production costs.

Financially, the Formula 1 next engine regulations cut the engine budget cap by 50 percent from its current level of $190 million USD (£143 miillion GBP) per year. The overarching framework also represents a compromise regarding the sport’s future identity. By mandating a turbo, the FIA satisfies industry demands for road relevance and fuel efficiency, moving away from FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s initial push for naturally aspirated V10 or V8 engines. The FIA plans to refine this proposal during paddock discussions over the next few weeks before presenting the finalized document to the FIA World Motor Sport Council in December.
