The governing body denied Red Bull the chance to upgrade its power unit despite the team failing to secure a single victory across the first 12 races of the year. This ruling firmly establishes the benchmark for combustion performance under the heavily regulated hybrid era.
Introduced alongside the sweeping 2026 engine regulations, the ADUO mechanism aims to level the playing field by granting extra homologated upgrades to manufacturers with a significant power deficit. The most recent analysis determined that Mercedes operates within a two to four percent deficit window relative to the benchmark. Meanwhile Audi, Ferrari and Honda all fall more than four percent behind the leading standard. Consequently the Silver Arrows are permitted one additional upgrade in both 2026 and 2027 while the other three chasing manufacturers receive two development tokens each.
The entire evaluation process remains a point of intense contention within the paddock. The current formula exclusively measures the performance of the internal combustion engine rather than calculating the total hybrid output.
