Rodney Rothman will direct from a script he co-wrote with Hill and Meghan Malloy, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller returning as producers alongside Neal H. Moritz.

The title is the first creative decision worth examining. 22 Jump Street ends with an extended montage imagining Schmidt and Jenko’s future undercover missions: medical school, culinary school, dance school, a firefighter academy, a seminary, outer space, a video game and an animated series. The sequence was a direct parody of franchise excess, a film openly mocking the inevitability of its own sequels. That montage effectively served as a fictional 23 Jump Street, which means titling the actual third film 24 Jump Street is not a mistake or an oversight — it is the franchise acknowledging its own joke and then stepping over it. The number 23 was spoken for before the film even entered development.

Rothman’s creative pedigree makes him a considered choice for the material. He co-wrote 22 Jump Street with Michael Bacall and Oren Uziel, meaning the franchise’s meta-comedic architecture is already embedded in his understanding of how these films work. His subsequent work co-writing and directing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse demonstrated he could bring that same self-aware formal intelligence to a larger, more stylistically ambitious canvas. Writing the 24 Jump Street script with Hill and Malloy keeps the comedic sensibility inside the room rather than importing a new voice.

The path to this announcement has been long. A third installment has been in active development at Sony since 2016 under the title 23 Jump Street, originally conceived as a crossover with the Men in Black franchise. That project stalled despite Tatum describing the script as “the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie.” In October 2025, Tatum publicly said he did not think a third film would ever happen. The announcement of 24 Jump Street six months later, with a new title, a new director and a new script, suggests the project has been substantially rebuilt from what came before rather than simply revived.

Lord and Chris Miller’s return as producers rather than directors gives the franchise’s original architects a continued stake without requiring them to step back into the chair. Their production banner has remained active across the intervening years, and their presence gives the project institutional continuity even as Rothman takes the creative lead.
