Sony Pictures and filmmaker Zach Cregger have reached a major box-office milestone with Resident Evil, officially surpassing $400 million USD in worldwide ticket sales. The live-action video game reboot has now become the highest-grossing entry in the 24-year-old horror franchise.
Produced on a $75 million USD budget, the film has generated $157.399 million USD in North America and $242.6 million USD internationally, toppling 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ($312 million USD) for the series crown. The milestone also cements the project as Cregger’s biggest box-office achievement to date, eclipsing his 2022 breakout Barbarian ($46 million USD) and 2025’s Weapons ($270 million USD).
Starring Austin Abrams as a medical courier battling infested monsters across Raccoon City, the adaptation opened in September to a franchise-record $60 million USD domestically and $108 million USD globally. Buoyed by positive reviews and strong audience scores throughout October, the horror release was driven by substantial overseas returns, including $71.4 million USD in China, $19.4 million USD in the United Kingdom, and $12.7 million USD in Mexico.
The commercial success delivers a profitable rebound for Sony following 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which stalled at $42 million USD worldwide, revitalizing the Capcom gaming property originally adapted on screen by Milla Jovovich in 2002.
