Lucasfilm is officially inviting fans back to the darker side of the galaxy with the latest trailer drop for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. Promising a pulpy, noir-inspired aesthetic brought to life through a unique watercolor and paint-on-glass animation style, the highly anticipated series explores a brutal and relentless new chapter for one of the franchise’s most iconic villains.
Set during the early days of the Galactic Empire and picking up after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the 10-episode series finds a humbled Maul seeking to rebuild his criminal empire. Operating out of Janix—a planet seemingly untouched by Imperial reach—Maul is driven by a singular goal: exacting revenge on his former master, Darth Sidious. However, his isolation doesn’t last long as the Empire soon arrives to lock the planet down, led by deadly Imperial Inquisitors including the Eleventh Brother and Marrok.
To combat the growing Imperial threat, Maul seeks out a “weapon” to aid his cause. He crosses paths with Devon Izara, a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan on the run after surviving Order 66. As Maul offers Devon and her master the power to bring down their common enemy, the series teases the dangerous possibility of the young survivor becoming the former Sith’s new dark apprentice. Created by Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni, the project promises heavy-hitting lightsaber combat and ruthless Force action that pushes the boundaries of Star Wars animation.
Bringing the ambitious story to life is a massive ensemble voice cast. Sam Witwer makes his highly anticipated return to voice Maul, starring alongside Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, newly minted Oscar nominee Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, and Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio-Daki. Rounding out the impressive roster are Richard Ayoade, Chris Diamantopoulos, Charlie Bushnell, Vanessa Marshall, A.J. LoCascio, and Steve Blum.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premieres with a two-episode event on April 6, 2026, exclusively via Disney+, with the final episodes slated to debut on May 4 (Star Wars Day).
