Apple has unveiled HomePod mini 2, the second generation of its pocket-sized smart speaker, rebuilt around the S10 chip and a fresh five-color lineup. The update brings Sound Glow, a reactive lighting layer across the top surface, along with support for four-speaker surround sound, Mac speaker duty and the overhauled Siri AI assistant, which is set to arrive through a later software update.
At the core of the speaker is the Apple S10 chip, which drives a computational audio system that reads music as it plays and adjusts dynamic range, loudness and acoustic output on the fly. The result is 360-degree sound from the same compact footprint, scalable from a single unit to a stereo pair or a full multiroom configuration.
Sound Glow is the most visible addition, transforming the speaker’s top into a lit surface that pulses and shifts in real time with the low and high frequencies of a track. Colors are pulled from the album artwork in Now Playing, so each song generates its own palette, while ambient soundscapes such as rain trigger custom animations designed for winding down. Controlling Sound Glow by voice requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
Those lighting effects play off the new finishes, offered in pink, green, blue, white and midnight and designed to coordinate with Apple’s Mac colorways. HomePod mini 2 can now act as the audio output for any Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later, either solo or as a stereo pair, covering movies, games and video calls. “HomePod mini 2 brings together Siri AI, gorgeous new colors, and incredible audio,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Home Product Marketing, in a press release.
Home theater setups get a meaningful bump as well, since HomePod mini 2 can now form a four-speaker surround system with the 4th-generation Apple TV 4K. The speakers work out where each unit sits in the room and calibrate timing and levels automatically, with HomePod (2nd generation) also compatible provided the front and rear pairs match.
Siri AI, built on an entirely new architecture using the latest Apple Foundation Models, will reach the speaker through a future software update in English across the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the UK. Once live, HomePod mini 2 can distinguish up to six household members by voice and, when linked to an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, act on personal context across apps, from surfacing a song a friend texted to adding items to a grocery list. Households without a compatible phone still get Siri AI’s web-sourced world knowledge, more natural back-and-forth conversation and improved music discovery, while requests are processed either on-device or through Private Cloud Compute, where data is never stored or made accessible to Apple.
As a smart home controller, the speaker handles voice-triggered routines like locking doors, closing the garage, dimming lights or adjusting the thermostat, and doubles as a home hub for remote control through the Home app. Sound Recognition listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and pushes alerts to iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and the speaker can announce visitors by name via Face Recognition when paired with Apple Home Collection video doorbells and cameras, which roll out starting in December.
Apple’s material spec extends to the internals, with fully recycled rare earth elements in every magnet and 100 percent recycled copper, gold plating and tin solder across all Apple-designed circuit boards. The packaging is entirely fiber-based.
Pre-orders for HomePod mini 2 are open now via Apple and the Apple Store app across the US and more than 23 other countries and regions, with in-store availability beginning Friday, October 30.
