Apple Is Reportedly Developing a Screenless Health Band

Apple is preparing a radical shift in its wearable lineup by exploring the development of an Apple screenless health tracker. According to an early August 2026 report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant’s industrial design team has spent roughly a year conceptualizing new hardware formats. Gurman described this internal exploration as something that transforms the product for a new era, equating the scale of the design rethink to the iPhone eventually jumping to a foldable form factor. The display-free band is being weighed alongside other potential wearable changes such as a round display concept and a ceramic chassis reported by PCMag. However, the reporter noted that the round Apple Watch is unlikely to ever ship, framing the screenless band as the most plausible product to emerge from the initiative. By stripping away the display, Apple could eliminate the daily charging requirements that have long been a common friction point for its smartwatch users while simultaneously targeting a lower price umbrella the brand has never fully occupied just below the Apple Watch SE.

While Apple remains uncommitted to the screenless band, and while the device lacks a finalized sensor array, official name, price or release date, the software engine required to power it is already on the market. On September 18, 2026, Apple launched the Readiness app on the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. The system calculates a daily readiness score ranging from 0 to 10 by analyzing recent activity, sleep data and overnight vitals. Users receive one of four daily recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It. To fuel these insights, the underlying health system samples Heart Rate Variability (HRV) every five minutes. Company officials state this rate is 24 times denser than what the preceding Series 11 could manage. Engineers then split these readings into an overall HRV and a dedicated Recovery HRV, uniquely comparing the data against a user’s personal baseline rather than a generic population average.

The strongest internal advocate for the stripped-down tracker is Eddy Cue, who assumed oversight of Apple’s health and fitness division from outgoing COO Jeff Williams in late 2025. Cue told colleagues that Apple needs to move much faster in the wearable health and fitness category. His leadership sparked significant internal pivots. Following the management change, Apple deliberately scaled back Mulberry, which was an ambitious AI coaching project. Instead of packaging the intelligence features of the Mulberry project as a premium, paid add-on layer, Apple redirected that architecture directly into the core Health app.

By moving advanced AI tracking into the native ecosystem and deploying the intensive Readiness scoring system on current watches, Apple has quietly laid the software groundwork for a display-free future. The screenless band acts as the ultimate hardware vessel for this new infrastructure. Alongside exploring new premium price tiers positioned above the Ultra and Hermès ranges, the potential rollout of a screenless tracker indicates Apple is prepared to heavily segment its wearable lineup to capture every end of the fitness market.
