Summary

  • Carhartt opened its first NYC flagship in the Flatiron District, strategically chosen to serve the city’s large population of skilled tradespeople
  • The large store features an expanded product mix and gives greater prominence to womenswear, a major growth area for the brand
  • The brand is celebrating its debut by giving away custom NYC-branded K87 T-shirts and affirming its commitment to durable workwear authenticity

Carhartt, the Dearborn, Michigan-based brand with a 136-year heritage, is making its long-awaited entry into Manhattan by opening its first New York City store in the Flatiron District. The expansive 5,000-square-foot location at 936 Broadway was strategically chosen for its accessibility to the local community, preferring the area’s blue-collar core over higher-profile spots like the Empire State Building.

Chief Brand Officer Susan Hennike confirmed that, despite popular belief, New York City hosts a vast population of skilled tradespeople—carpenters, electricians, and construction workers—who are the brand’s core demographic. The new store, the company’s 57th globally, is part of a plan to reach 100 units by 2030, with a focus on locations that remain “brand right.”

While the product mix is consistent with other cities, the sheer size of the Flatiron unit allows it to showcase a much broader selection of the brand’s rugged assortment. The new space will also give more visibility to womenswear, a key growth area now comprising 20-25% of the mix in new locations. This is an intentional move to support the increasing number of women in the trades, offering durable, quality apparel “built specifically for her.”

To celebrate the debut, Carhartt is giving away a custom K87 pocket T-shirt with a New York City logo. The brand maintains that while it welcomes all customers, including the fashion crowd, it will never “waver from authenticity,” ensuring all products are rigorously tested for performance and durability. It is important to note that while this is the first Carhartt store in New York City, there are two other Carhartt Work in Progress stores located in SoHo and Williamsburg in Brooklyn which are owned and operated separately.
