18 East and Goodhood Team Up for "The Improbable Builders Co-Op" Capsule
A nine-piece offering of familiar silhouettes in handcrafted materials, inspired by the recontextualization of open spaces in urban environments.
18 East and Goodhood have joined forces for a cross-Atlantic capsule inspired by the recontextualization of open spaces in urban environments. Dubbed “The Improbable Builders Co-Op,” the capsule draws from Charas: The Impossible Dome Builders, a book that chronicled the unlikely partnership between architect and geodesic dome inventor R. Buckminster Fuller and six ex-gang members called CHARAS, who joined forces to build a dome on a vacant lot near New York City’s Manhattan Bridge.
To translate this concept into garments, the collaborative partners took familiar utilitarian garments including fleeces, bomber jackets and overshirts, and remade them by way of handcrafted production techniques, all performed in India. Standouts include a printed fleece jacket and vest dubbed the Dabu, each of which uses a mud-resist dye plus handspun and hand-woven materials, and the Khadid flight jacket, which boasts handspun, handwoven cotton canvas yarn plus a hand-screened liner print. Other pieces include a full-zip shirt, balloon cargo pants, a loopback terry fleece sweatshirt, a shaggy cardigan, an overdyed five-pocket jean and a strapback cap. The collection’s lookbook was even shot in the same neighborhood that Fuller and the CHARAS constructed the dome in.

The 18 East x Goodhood “Improbable Builders Co-Op” collection marks the first time that an 18 East collection will be available physically outside of the United States and Japan — the brand typically eschews wholesale, instead focusing on its own channels — and it’ll be available via both 18 East and Goodhood’s websites and stores alike on January 9.
