Herman Miller Introduces Bamboo-Based Upholstery to the Legendary Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman

The plant-based leather alternative helps reduce the chair’s materials’ carbon footprint by a third.

Since Charles and Ray Eames first revealed the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman to the public via an appearance on NBC back in 1956, the two-piece set has grown into a mid-century icon thanks to its sleek molded plywood curves, leisurely reclined position and sumptuous leather that Charles once said had “the warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” Now, nearly 70 years later, Herman Miller has made the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman available in its most sustainable iteration yet: one that swaps out its standard leather for a bamboo-based leather alternative that cuts the piece’s materials’ carbon footprint by up to 35%, a drop that’s achievable due to bamboo’s rapid growth, CO2 absorption rate and lesser need of water than other naturally-grown plants.

Available in classic ivory, russet, and black color configurations, the new material is soft and durable, like leather, but it also boasts increased scratch resistance and colorfastness. It can be combined with any of the chair and ottoman’s existing shell options — walnut, santos palisander, ash, or oak — and is also available in both standard and tall sizes.

This carbon-conscious effort is far from Herman Miller’s first attempt at sustainability. In 1953, brand founder D.J. De Pree noted that the company aimed to be a “good corporate neighbor” by serving as a “good steward of the environment.” In years past, the company has put those words into action by ensuring the Eames Molded Plastic Chairs are constructed from 100% recycled plastic and the Aeron Chair is made of intercepted ocean-bound plastic.

The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman with bamboo-based upholstery are available now via the Herman Miller webstore and Herman Miller/MillerKnoll retail outposts and dealers. Prices range from $6,395-$9,495 USD, depending on height and shell options.
