Kenshi Yonezu’s “Mainichi - Every Day” Brings a Playful Twist to Workday Blues

Japanese singer-songwriter Kenshi Yonezu has dropped the official music video for his newest track, “Mainichi – Every Day.”

The track opens up with a solemn piano chord before cueing in Yonezu’s familiar yet signature vocals, accompanied by an epic backing of synthesizers. As he repeats the words “Every day” on a heartfelt and lyrical note of “I’ve worked hard in my own way” and “when nothing changes at all,” the tone of the song takes a dramatic turn right after the uttering of “Can I still carry on loving it?”

What comes after is a noticeably up-tempo beat with bouncy rhythms, transforming the melancholic tone from the opening into a much more hopeful and playful vibe. This is brought to life with the help of powerful visuals that narrate the story of Yonezu dreading to go work, before being forcefully pulled into a car to begin his commute for work.

In keeping with the chart-topping J-pop artist’s eccentric vision, the pre-chorus and chorus take on the weekday blues with a Broadway-like twist both visually and sonically. As Yonezu dances away into different sets with his seven colorful dancers, he is abruptly taken back to his “home” where the blues kick back in along with the reprise of “Every Day.” This time, when the lines “Can I still carry on loving it?” are sung, instead of being transported into a fun-filled day of activities, a plate of cream is thrown at his face to conclude the video.

Directed by Yusuke Tanaka, the one-shot music video marks his first collaboration with Yonezu. The song is also used as the official track for Coca‑Cola Japan’s Georgia canned coffee line commercial.
