'The Boy and the Heron' To Make Streaming Premiere on Max
As GKIDS extends its agreement with Max for the exclusive US film streaming rights of Studio Ghibli titles.
Studio Ghibli‘s The Boy and the Heron will officially make its streaming premiere on Max.
The news arrives as Max and GKIDS extend their partnership to a multiyear agreement, giving the streaming service the exclusive US film streaming rights for Studio Ghibli. Max has been the US home to the Ghibli catalog since 2020, which marked the first time the award-winning films were available to stream. A streaming release date for The Boy and the Heron is yet to be announced, but will land on the service some time this year.
“Our subscribers are always looking for unique stories, and we are happy to continue to offer these award-winning, critically acclaimed films and to add ‘The Boy and the Heron’ to our deep and rich Max content offering,” said Elizabeth Bannan Atcheson, VP, Content Acquisitions, Warner Bros. Discovery.
The Boy and the Heron marks Hayao Miyazaki‘s first feature film in a decade and recently took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. It was helmed and written by Miyazaki himself and produced by Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, while its musical scored was created by the filmmaker’s long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi.
