Ghibli Park Is Bringing ‘Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind’ to Life in a Brand New Zone

The studio had long declared the proto-Ghibli classic off-limits, making this indoor expansion a genuine surprise.

Ghibli Park is adding an area themed around Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, a film Studio Ghibli had previously kept out of the park

Studio Ghibli itself proposed the Nausicaä concept during planning for the new expansion, a reversal from its earlier stance

The zone will be built as the park's second entirely indoor area, a decision tied to Japan's punishing summer heat

Ghibli Park is expanding once again, and this time it’s finally opening the door to Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, a Studio Ghibli landmark the Aichi Prefecture theme park had long treated as untouchable. The new area marks a notable change of heart from the studio, which had previously blocked efforts to give the film a presence at the park.

The reversal is striking because of how firmly Ghibli had held the line. According to Aichi governor Hideaki Omura, the prefecture had floated the idea of a stronger Nausicaä presence before, only to be turned away. “Studio Ghibli would not let us touch Nausicaä,” he said at the press conference announcing the expansion. What makes the about-face even more surprising is that, during conceptual talks for the new section, it was Studio Ghibli itself that put the Nausicaä theme on the table.

That history gives the choice real weight. Released in Japanese theaters in 1984 and adapted from a manga Hayao Miyazaki had begun two years earlier, Nausicaä is widely regarded as the de-facto first Studio Ghibli film. Its production predated the studio’s formal founding, but the creative team behind it went on to form Ghibli’s founding core, and the project gave Miyazaki his first real shot at realizing an ambitious vision with a proper budget. Granting it a permanent home fills one of the more conspicuous gaps in a park that has steadily worked through the Miyazaki canon, from the Totoro-themed Dondoko Forest to Mononoke Village and the witch-focused Valley of the Witches.

On the practical side, the Nausicaä zone will sit within Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park in Nagakute, roughly 45 minutes from downtown Nagoya, on a stretch of the West Gate Plaza near the Koi no Ike pond and across the water from Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse. The flat plot means little reshaping of the land will be required, and current photos suggest minimal greenery would be lost in development. A concept sketch also hints that the plaza’s existing tusk-shaped clock will remain in place.

Design-wise, this will be Ghibli Park’s second fully indoor area after the Grand Warehouse, a call made with Japan’s increasingly dangerous summer heat in mind. The indoor format sidesteps the challenge of recreating Nausicaä’s sweeping desert landscapes outdoors while opening the door to detailed interior sets and visual effects that could simulate the sensation of flight central to the film. Fueling anticipation further, the prefecture’s press materials featured an image of Nausicaä encountering an Ohm, a possible sign that at least one of the story’s giant creatures will greet visitors.

No opening date has been set for the Nausicaä area, though the state of the site suggests construction could begin once the design is finalized.
