Bella Thorne is stepping behind the camera to write, direct and star in Spring Breakers 2, marking her sophomore feature as a director

Original producers Chris and Roberta Hanley are back on board for a sequel they describe as a clean break from tradition rather than a straight follow-up

The revival arrives more than a decade after an earlier sequel attempt collapsed amid public pushback from the first film's biggest name

Bella Thorne is taking full creative control of Spring Breakers 2, with Entertainment Weekly conforming that she’s signing on to write, direct and star in the long-gestating sequel to Harmony Korine‘s 2013 crime drama. Original producers Chris and Roberta Hanley are returning in the same roles, handing the reins to a filmmaker intent on reshaping the property for a new generation rather than replaying its greatest hits.

The original Spring Breakers became a defining piece of early-2010s provocation, an A24 release that turned Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Korine and Ashley Benson into bikini-clad avatars of youthful excess before pulling them into the orbit of James Franco‘s cornrowed arms dealer, Alien. Its candy-colored menace and slow drift into bloodshed made it a lightning rod, equal parts art-house dare and pop-culture spectacle, and cemented its status as a reference point that fashion, music and film have circled ever since.

Thorne, a former Disney Channel star turned multi-hyphenate, is framing her version as a deliberate departure. “The original Spring Breakers was an iconic cultural touchstone, and taking the reins as a filmmaker is a dream project for me,” she said in a statement. “I’ve always been drawn to stories that explore the unapologetic, unfiltered side of youth culture, and I can’t wait to deliver a wild, high-stakes thrill ride that honors the first film while forging its own distinct path.” Her screenplay recenters the story on five young women who wander into the wildest party of their lives on spring break, only to discover they were never guests at all, but targets.

The path here has been anything but smooth. The Hanleys first floated a Korine-free, Franco-free sequel back in 2014, a move that drew a blistering public rebuke from the original’s star, who dismissed the effort as a cash grab riding on someone else’s vision. “I want everyone to know that whoever is involved in the sequel is jumping on board a poison ship,” Franco declared at the time. That version never materialized, leaving the franchise dormant until Thorne, fresh off wrapping her directorial debut Color Your Hurt, entered the picture with a script that convinced the producers to hand her the keys.

Casting reflects the same appetite for raw discovery that defined the first film. Spring Breakers casting director Mary Vernieu, whose recent credits include Knives Out, is teaming with her Euphoria collaborator Jessica Kelly to run an international open casting call, hunting for undiscovered talent to line up alongside Thorne in the lead roles. It’s a deliberate echo of the original’s instinct for mixing real faces with familiar ones, and a signal that this reboot wants its own unvarnished energy rather than a nostalgia rerun.

A release date for Spring Breakers 2 has not been announced, and the film is still in its early stages with the global casting search now underway.
