The filming of Euphoria‘s much-anticipated third season has been delayed, as creator Sam Levinson continues to write the upcoming installment’s script. With the shoot on hold, the cast has been given the green light to take on other roles in the meantime.

HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”

Per the outlet’s sources, there was not a firm production timeline in place, though the shoot was expected to begin in the next few months. In November, HBO and Max Content CE Casey Bloys stated that Euphoria season three would premiere in 2025. Despite the delay, the network still aims to put out the forthcoming season next year.

Euphoria‘s second season premiered in January 2022, meaning there will be at least a three-year gap between where the show left off and what’s coming next.

Colman Domingo, who plays Ali Muhammed on Euphoria, recently expounded on Levinson’s writing process in an interview with GQ. “[Sam is] a person who writes and rewrites and writes and rewrites again, because I think he’s wrestling with what’s important,” he said. “He’s responding immediately to what the ills of the world are. I know that the one thing I can tell you is that he’s very much interested in the existential question of who we are right now. Our souls. That’s what he wants to figure out with season three.”

In Elle‘s August cover story with lead actress Zendaya, Levinson revealed that season three of the series would be a “film noir” that watches her character Rue “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”
