Charlotte Day Wilson Slows Down on New Single “Canopy”

Her sophomore album ‘Cyan Blue’ drops in May.

Charlotte Day Wilson has always been inspired by classic R&B music, an influence that’s permeated her discography. The impact of the genre is particularly palpable on her new track, “Canopy.”

Currently rolling out her third studio album Cyan Blue, the Canadian singer has released a few tracks from the project. The recent “I Don’t Love You” infuses R&B with electro-style production. “Canopy,” however, takes a more timeless approach, seeing Day Wilson step back from the soundboard and slow it down with gospel-inspired, poignant vocals.

“It’s like a canopy all that hate, I’m above it, can’t live that way,” she croons in one bar.

Following 2021’s debut, Alpha, a project that featured contributions from the likes of Syd and Daniel Caesar, it may be surprising to some that Cyan Blue is only Day Wilson’s second album. The singer has been immersed in the music industry for well over a decade and while still an emerging name, has been sampled by some of the industry’s heaviest hitters, from James Blake to Drake.

“I want to look through the unjaded eyes of my younger self again,” Wilson described the album. “Before there wasn’t as much baggage, before so much life was lived. But I also wish that my younger self could see where I am now. It would be nice to be able to impart some of the wisdom and clarity that I have now onto her.”
