Mercedes-Benz Electrifies the "Popemobile"
A handcrafted one-off based on the new electric G-Class, created for Pope Francis.
Mercedes-Benz has delivered its first all-electric Popemobile to Pope Francis, based on the new G-Class EV. The custom-designed vehicle, handcrafted by teams in Graz, Sindelfingen and Rome, ensures the pontiff will travel emission-free during the 2025 Jubilee, an event expected to draw millions to Rome.
The electric Popemobile fulfills strict requirements tailored to the Pope’s needs. It features a height-adjustable, swiveling central seat for enhanced visibility and interaction, while a hardtop provides weather protection. Unique craftsmanship includes a redesigned single-piece rear door and a pearl-white finish, continuing the tradition of iconic Popemobile styling.
In a comment on the vehicle, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, stated, “With this Popemobile, we are sending a clear message of commitment to electromobility and decarbonization.”
Mercedes-Benz has a legacy of providing vehicles to the Vatican for nearly a century, with the first Popemobile — a modified G-Class — introduced in the 1980s. This latest addition, built on the G580 platform, combines EQ technology with bespoke features to accommodate the Pope. The electric Popemobile will make its official public debut during the 2025 Jubilee.
