The pair’s origin is uncertain, but the “FA21” tooling code on the midsole indicates that it’s a scrapped sample.
Love him or hate him, you can’t deny the prolific nature of Travis Scott’s partnership with Nike and Jordan Brand. For the better part of a decade, the rapper and the brand(s) have cranked out a plethora of high-heat and high-hype releases, an output that also lends itself to a cornucopia of sample pairs that didn’t see the light of day. The latest of those to surface is an alternate take on the Travis Scott x fragment design x Air Jordan 1 Low.
Though the pair’s backstory is uncertain, the main factor that indicates it is indeed a sample is the tooling code on the midsole. Upon close inspection, it reads “FA21,” indicating this was a scrapped prototype of the retail pair that touched down in August of 2021. The main differences between this pair and the iteration that did eventually see the light of day are sixfold: there are no sail accents on this iteration, there’s much heavier use of blue on the overlays as opposed to the black/blue mixture on the retail pair, the Swooshes are done up entirely in black instead of a two-tone treatment, text hits are used on midsoles and quarter panels, there are no embossed logos on the heel (though the co-branded heel tabs are left intact) and extra embellishments aren’t present on the tongue.
This isn’t the first Scott/fragment/Air Jordan 1 Low sample we’ve seen either, as fragment design founder Hiroshi Fujiwara was spotted in a mostly white sample back in September 2022.
