Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Sam Levinson‘s The Idol has officially been cancelled by HBO after one season.

The confirmation arrives after wide speculation of the show’s future as HBO did not release any news regarding a second season following the conclusion of season one in early July. “The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” an HBO spokesperson said. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”

Variety adds that the cancellation of the series was decided as both audiences and cast members were conflicted about the show’s “potential to continue.” The Idol stars Moses Sumney and Da’Vine Joy Randolph both explained differing perspectives, with Sumney stating that he initially thought The Idol was a limited series and Randolph thinking that “everyone’s intention [was] to have a second season.”

Rumors of a second season hit the internet just shortly after the end of season one, however, when The Weeknd to Twitter to share some words of gratitude and behind-the-scene photos of him and co-star Lily-Rose Depp. “the finale. grateful to share this moment with you all as the season comes to an end. continue to push the vision no matter how bumpy the journey,” he tweeted. “Jocelyn Forever.”

Elsewhere in entertainment, Denis Villeneuve hinted at the possibility of Dune: Part 3.
