Denis Villeneuve Hints at Possibility of 'Dune: Part 3'

Noting that creating a trilogy “would be the dream.”

Dennis Villeneuve has touched on the possibility of directing a third part to his Dune adaptation.

In a recent Empire cover story for Dune: Part Two, the filmmaker revealed that it “would be the dream” if he was able to create a trilogy. Part Three, however, would follow Frank Herbert’s sequel novel Dune Messiah. “Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero,” he shared. “Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”

“After that the books become more… esoteric,” Villeneuve continued, noting that it will mark the end of his Dune adaptation. Although Part Three will depend on the success of its predecessor, the director hinted at the fact that the groundwork for a trilogy has already begun, “I will say, there are words on paper.”

Dune: Part Two has been delayed to 2024 amidst the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but was originally scheduled to premiere on November 3.
