Kenshi Yonezu Releases ‘The Boy and the Heron’ Theme Song, “Spinning Globe”
A bittersweet ode to Hayao Miyazaki’s final film.
Following the news confirming the North American release of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, Kenshi Yonezu has just released the film’s official theme song, “Spinning Globe.”
Composed and performed by Yonezu, the track opens with the sound of the bagpipes, playing long, slow notes. The bagpipes’ timbre is then joined by piano chords and melancholic humming, all in harmony to build a sad yet hopeful tone. The mood of the song becomes clear once Yonezu’s emotional vocals and regretful lyrics are added to the ensemble, painting an aural picture of Miyazaki’s final film at Studio Ghibli.
Specially written for The Boy and the Heron, Yonezu explains in an official press release that the track serves as a way for him to give back to Miyazaki, whose works have accompanied and inspired him ever since he was a child.
Listen to Kenshi Yonezu’s “Spinning Globe” on Spotify, Apple Music, and other major streaming platforms now.
