Awake NY on Monday revealed a new capsule collection dedicated to Gil Scott-Heron, the influential American jazz singer, poet and author known most prominently for his spoken word performances in the ’70s and ’80s.

“[Scott-Heron's] lyrics often addressed social issues such as racism, poverty, and drug addiction,” Awake wrote on Instagram alongside the collection’s announcement. “We honor his legacy and impact with this exclusive collection.”

The commemorative collection includes an array of hoodies, long-sleeve shirts, a button-down, a cap and a rug — all of which make references to Scott-Heron’s influential works. Among them, the “Camp Shirt” features printed graphics from Scott-Heron’s famous poetry book, Now and Then, and the hoodie, which comes in black and blue colorways, boasts lyrics from his popular jazz song, “Lady Day and John Coltrane.”

Elsewhere, the long-sleeve shirt, which arrives in black and white, features portraits of the polymath alongside lyrics from “Pieces of a Man,” and the six-panel hat reads “Lady Day and John Coltrane” across the front. Rounding out the range, the collection’s rug hosts the cover art for Scott-Heron’s poetry book, Small Talk at 125th and Lenox.

Awake NY’s Gil Scott-Heron collection is now available to shop on the brand’s webstore. Price range from $60 USD to $225 USD. Take a closer look at the line in the gallery above.
