Mater Unveils Conscious Chair in Three New Colorways
Crafted from upcycled waste materials.

The Danish furniture entity, Mater, has unveiled its Conscious Chair in three new colorways.
Mater first introduced the chair in 2022, which is an upcycled iteration of the original 1958 “school chair” from Børge Mogensen and Esben Klint. Now the chair is revitalized in Coffee Waste Green, Coffee Waste Dark and Coffee Waste Black. Aside from the chairs FSC-certified oak frame and Matek® blend backrest, what makes the chairs stand out is the usage of waste material. Across the three chairs, Mater utilizes upcycled industrial waste from German plumbing fixtures, discarded coffee shell waste and sawdust. Additionally, the new offering is available in composite finishes that nod to stone, marble or terrazzo.
“Our family shares the understanding that just because you can produce some of Børge’s designs, it doesn’t mean that you have to. It needs to make sense in ways that cannot necessarily be measured. It must be driven by visionaries who do not accept the world’s status quo,” said the granddaughter of Børge Mogensen, Emilie Ventujol Mogensen. “This is how we perceive Mater. They are on an important mission working with circular production. The future calls for companies that take that responsibility and manage to make it into a solid and lucrative business. This is something we would like to support with our family’s name and values.”
