Insidious: The Red Door surpassed expectations for its opening weekend at the box office, raking in a whopping $32.6 million USD. The film, which arrived as the fifth installment in the Insidious franchise, snatched the No. 1 spot from Disney‘s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which acquired $26.5 million USD in its second weekend.

The Red Door, which is said to be the last entry in the franchise, cost approximately $16 million USD to make, allowing the Sony film to turn a profit in its first weekend of release, across 3,188 domestic venues. Indiana Jones 5, meanwhile, opened with $60 million USD, a far cry from the film’s budget, which neared $300 million USD.

The new Insidious installment also saw comparable success internationally, bringing in $31.4 million USD from theaters abroad. The Red Door became the highest-grossing horror premiere overseas, though Indiana Jones 5 still held the top spot by a narrow margin at $31.8 million USD. Domestic and international sales combined, The Red Door‘s opening weekend revenue totaled $64 million USD worldwide.

Insidious: The Last Key, the fourth installment in the franchise released in 2018, earned $29.5 million on its opening weekend. 2013’s Insidious: Chapter Two still holds the highest opening weekend numbers of the franchise, bringing in $40.2 million USD upon its premiere.

As for the rest of the domestic box office rankings, Sound of Freedom snagged the third spot, Pixar’s Elemental claimed fourth and Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse held down fifth place.

Insidious: The Red Door stars original cast members Patrick Wilson, Ty Simpkins, Andrew Astor and Rose Byrne; Wilson also directed the film.
