LABRUM Wins The Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design 2023
Celebrating his meaningful and sustainable approach to design.

LABRUM designer Foday Dumbuya has won The Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, presented by His Majesty King Charles III for the first time.
In collaboration with the British Fashion Council, Dumbuya was celebrated at London’s 180 Studios and outlined as one of Britain’s strongest talents. The award celebrates England’s fashion innovators, honoring LABRUM for its cultural approach to design.
Founded in 2014, the brand highlights West African values combined with British tailoring and a story to tell. The Queen Elizabeth II Award salutes LABRUM’s sustainable design methods while practicing “community engagement” with meaningful motos.
While accepting the award, Dumbuya delivered an emotional speech:
“Growing up in Sierra Leone, my deep love and appreciation for my country, the rich and vibrant culture inspired me to create LABRUM. I saw how fashion can be a powerful tool for self-expression, cultural identity, and economic growth. With that in mind, I set out to create pieces that are not only beautiful, but also empower local communities while preserving the culture.”
Thanking everyone who helped him achieve his dreams, Dumbuya finished with: “I think this award is for all young British and Sierra Leonean kids who continue to dream. Please don’t stop dreaming.”
