Thom Browne Gets Cutesy and Kitsch in Spring 2023 Campaign

Fresh from his Vogue May cover shoot, which saw the designer create a dress for Shalom Harlow inspired by the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, Thom Browne now spotlights his Spring 2023 collection in its own paired-back campaign.

Whereas the runway collection served up a kinky array of punk fetishization, drawing the eye to jockstraps, sculpted abs, and anchor-shaped face coverings, the campaign takes a more daily-wearable approach.

Hooked on a pastel palette, looks range from gingham chenille tweed ensembles comprising layers upon layers. A coat lies on top, falling to the knee with an oversized structure that only slightly reveals camp shorts and a vest underneath, these too layered atop a light gingham check shirt and striped tie. The kitsch factor is heightened with Browne’s signature sailor hat, which is tied with a sort of bolo fastener, and of course this is continued the entire way through another men’s look that’s centered around the designer’s quintessential pleated skirt.

Elsewhere, gingham check tweed finished in a rainbow of soft spring hues comes together across a varsity bomber jacket, which sees its collegiate aesthetic amped up with a knitted cardigan vest, contrasting checks and stripes on shirts and ties, the signature dog bag, a skirt, and complementing socks and shoes. The theme is clear throughout, and culminates with another pair of plimsolls that round out all the looks.
