Sony's Latest PS5 Update Features Discord Integration, 1440p Improvements and More
Other features of the update include easy data transfer between PS5 consoles and a new way to capture gameplay clips.
Sony has released their highly-anticipated Version 7 software update for the PS5, which includes Discord integration. Besides the ability for PS5 gamers to participate in Discord voice calls on their system, the update also includes improvements to the PS5’s 1440p mode, the ability for users to transfer data between different PS5 consoles and a new feature that lets you use your voice to record gameplay clips.
The PS5’s Discord integration follows Sony’s minority investment in Discord back in 2021. Much like the Discord feature Microsoft launched for the Xbox last year, Sony’s new integration lets Discord users take a call on their computer or phone, then transfer it to their PS5. Though it may seem clunky to not be able to take a call right on the system, the integration is sleek — as can be seen in the video below. After the call has been transferred to the PS5, you’ll be able to see a full list of your friends who are using Discord, and the call will exist in a separate app until it’s ended. As of now, there’s no integration for Discord chat messages or streaming.
Besides Discord, Sony has introduced a variable refresh rate to the PS5’s 1440p mode to improve the smoothness of ultra hi-res gaming, enabled US and UK-based gamers to capture specific pieces of gameplay with a simple voice command — “hey PlayStation, capture that,” or “hey PlayStation, capture the last 10 minutes,” for example — and debuted a new “friends who play” tile so you can see which of your friends are playing what. Last but not least, data and games can be transferred between systems via LAN or local Wi-Fi connections.
