Trippie Redd has opened up about the process of recording and putting out his latest album, Mansion Musik, in a new interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe.

The rapper shared how the project was inspired by wanting to “touch bases on all types of rage” and translate those feelings into music. Once he had recorded the project, however, he ran into an unexpected obstacle.

Redd revealed that he had been hacked and his unreleased music, spanning 25 songs across the LP, was held for ransom by the hackers, who threatened to drop it if he didn’t pay them $1 million USD.

“I was held for ransom on my project,” he said. “They wanted me to pay them a million dollars because they had all my records. Every single last one. All the features.”

Redd’s third studio album, 2020’s Pegasus, had also been leaked online, but this time, he decided to beat the hackers to the punch and “rush the project out.”

The rapper bypassed the phase of having an engineer mix it and used the raw cuts instead, though he eventually plans to release Mansion Musik again with mixed versions of the songs.

“On top of that, the Travis [Scott] song, I had it, but I didn’t have the session, so what Travis sent to me, I didn’t mix it,” he said.

Redd went on to say that he learned from the Pegasus leak, which occurred about two months before its scheduled release but still performed well on the charts.

“I was like, ‘If I don’t drop it now, then it’s going to be out there and they’re going to hear it regardless. They’re going to hear the bad mix regardless, so I’m going to put it out unmixed and see what they think.’”

Trippie Redd’s Mansion Musik is out for streaming everywhere now.

In other music news, Quavo will perform a tribute to Takeoff at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
