After five years of hosting satellite exhibitions, MASA Galeria has opened its first-ever permanent space. Choosing to settle in the heart of Mexico City, founders Age Salajõe, Héctor Esrawe, and Brian Thoreen selected a centuries-old building, which was once home to “art visionary” Federico Sánchez Fogarty.

Throughout, the gallerists have opted for clean interiors. Given that their exhibitions typically combine art with large design pieces, the lofty rooms make for perfect backdrops. Many details around the property exist from a remodeling that took place in the 1930s – almost a century after it was built.

At the time, Sánchez Fogarty applied his vision – overseeing much of design, and in particular a red-tiled room, where artists, architects, writers, and musicians would gather and attend his famously extravagant parties. While the parties are slated to take place in the future may be a little more low-key, MASA is set to make use of each inch of the space, and has integrated its new home with a dual exhibition program. “As MASA’s first permanent space, we are taking advantage of the 5-meter ceilings with clean yet classical architecture, setting a backdrop for a new chapter to curate solo and group shows throughout the year,” Salajõe says.

On the occasion of its opening, the gallery presents the work of artist and designer Brian Thoreen and multidisciplinary conceptual artist Mario Garcia Torres. Thoreen’s ‘Non-Zero-Sum‘ works explore unconventional ways of fabrication while García Torres presents ‘The Space Under My Chair & The Music I Was Listening To‘ – an homage to a sculpture by Bruce Nauman.

Both shows open on February 8 and are on view through to April 8. Take a first look above, and for related news – Burning Man has revealed the Temple for its 2023 festival.
