Mans FW23 Leaves Gimmicks in the Past

Focused on essentials, the collection is functional, versatile and colorful.

In previous seasons, Mans caught the fashion industry’s attention for its radiant range of double-take-worthy prints and striking colors. For Fall/Winter 2023, the concept menswear label wants to do away with almost all of it. In the spirit of stripping back, the contemporary imprint’s latest line prioritizes the essentials — without doing away with its vivid palette entirely.

The collection notes put it best: “No gimmicks and no overthinking.” Its goal is to “un-fussify” the conversation between color, texture and construction. To accomplish that, Mans offers a balance between nonchalance and restraint, articulating its tailoring capabilities through layering and careful fabrication pairings.

The result is quite elegant, with sharp shirting, textural knitwear, clean-cut trousers and an entourage of draping coats. Without overdoing it, the color story acquaints earthy tones with classic blues, reds and oranges. Mohair and silk form collection centerpieces, while cotton pumps through the range’s DNA.

Jackets are a Mans staple, and this season has many to offer: oversized trenches drape to the floor and shortened iterations tie around the waist, all the while the “Mans Classic” dons a ’20s-inspired, eight-button sleeve vent. Blazers appear in abundance; some follow traditional design codes, and others are stripped to their bones without lapels or visible buttons. As a minimalist mindset transforms the label, school jackets drop their chest pockets and eliminate their closures from public view, leaving just the textiles, tones and tailoring to tell the story.
