Jerrod Carmichael To Star in HBO Comedy Docuseries

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will star in and executive-produce a “comedy documentary series” about his own life. As part of his overall deal with HBO, the show will follow Carmichael “through encounters with friends, family, and strangers, all in his quest for love, sex and connection.”

Filmmaker Ari Katcher, who has previously worked with the comedian on Hulu’s Ramy, NBC’s The Carmichael Show and On the Count of Three, will direct the untitled project. Carmichael, who recently hosted the 2023 Golden Globe Awards, has starred in three HBO stand-up specials: Love at the Store (2014), 8 (2017) and Rothaniel (2022). Additionally, the network also streamed his multi-part video diaries — Home Videos and Sermon on the Mount — in 2019.

“We’ve loved working with Jerrod over the past 10 years, and to watch him discover new layers of both himself and his comedy,” said Nina Rosenstein, Executive Vice President of Programming at HBO, in a statement. “Rothaniel resonated with audiences in such a profound way, and his honesty and vulnerability are a perfect fit for this original format.”

Carmichael and Katcher will executive produce the series with Eli Despres and Susie Fox (Range Media Partners), as well as Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg (Edgeline Films).
