Motorola is reviving a trend from the early 1990s with its latest piece of technology. Unveiled at Lenovo Tech World ’23, the company demoed a smartphone in the style of a slap bracelet.

For the malleable, wrist-hugging phone, Motorola furthered its work in rollable, flexible display technology. This particular device uses an FHD+ pOLED display based on similar versions used in its past phones and PCs.

The smartphone can be rolled out as a standard, flat model, configured into bendy stand modes or rolled around one’s wrist. When in the standard setting, the phone measures 6.9 inches (175 mm) and will run a “full Android experience.”

It’s not entirely clear if all of the phones’ features are still available when it’s wrapped around one’s wrist. Motorola lauds the technology as “adaptive” and uses AI to adjust the display based on the screen’s positionality. When in a wrapped standing position, the screen shrinks down to a smaller 4.6-inch (117 mm) display.

Motorola says that when wrapped around one’s wrist entirely, the phone will have a display similar to that of its square smartphone, the motorola razr+.

While it’s an interesting sight and boasts some impressive technology, the company probably isn’t planning to roll out the smartphone to the masses anytime soon.
