Haider Ackermann Is Jean Paul Gaultier's Next Guest Designer
He will debut a couture collection next season.
Jean Paul Gaultier has welcomed many a designer through its doors as of late, from Y/Project and Diesel’s Glenn Martens to Olivier Rousteing and sacai, and now it’s about to say hello to another new name — this time around, the legendary Haider Ackermann.
The announcement was made earlier today on Instagram, debuting with a flashing logo that stops to reveal that this collection will — like the former guest designers’ offerings — be a couture collection by Ackermann. However, it’s worth noting that Jean Paul Gaultier’s consistent turn-out of couture has come under fire recently, with the like of Showstudio‘s creative director Calum Knight taking to TikTok to say “the Gaultier team is in a situation where they are rehashing ideas, that they’ve had for years, under a new creative director who hasn’t worked with them and they don’t have the relationships with.”
Regardless, the announcement follows on from the designer’s debut collection with FILA, which will be unveiled in Manchester in the U.K. soon. For JPG, it is hoped that Ackermann injects some of his own house codes and quintessential finesse and eye for detail into his couture for the house, bringing a subtler, more educated and informed side to glamor and sophistication, as opposed to previous seasons that have been all-out referential and, at times, costume experimental.
Speaking on the appointment, Ackermann said: “I am so tremendously thrilled to be the guest of the Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture house. Couture remains when everything has left. Haider Ackermann – Jean Paul Gaultier, one thought.”
