Otto Resource Recruits RANRA For Experimental Uniform Research Project

Berlin-based Otto Resource c/o Adam Barnard — which describes itself as a “digital product archive and research facility” — has unveiled a new collaboration RANRA. The London and Reykjavík-based label is led by Arnar Már Jónsson, and has also worked with Italian development center RGT Italia on this project.

The collaborative research initiative focuses on the OR-PL01 Two-Piece Uniform, which is constructed from a Ventile ripstop and finished with a DWR coating. The items are influenced by the subcultural impact of uniform and classic military silhouettes including the Eisenhower jacket — tying it in with Otto’s “Redefining Archetypes” manifesto — while the pants are based on a straight-leg chino with technical detailing.

Otto Resource c/o Adam Barnard founder Adam Barnard described the collaboration as a “swarm intelligence system,” explaining that the shared knowledge of collaborations “forms questions that we look to answer through innovation. As we are freed from all commercial obligations, we only ever add to our catalogue of unique design knowledge, regardless of whether we fail or succeed.”

RGT Italia’s Managing Director Giovanni Bruno also discussed the project, saying:

“The project began when Otto Resource had the rather unconventional idea to develop a garment dye process using a fabric like Ventile. This stimulated us at RGT to find a formula that would turn this idea into reality, and after a number of trials, we found some options that worked.

The result was a well-dyed product with a unique vintage finish, and a full retention of the fabric’s water repellency. We consider this a near-perfect solution for innovative and functional garments, with the possibility to be used by all interested brands!”
