SNICKERIET Launches First New Pieces in Five Years
The collection is made up of a cabinet, bookcase, stool, side and coffee table.

Swedish studio SNICKERIET has returned after a five-year hiatus, with a collection of made-to-order furniture that focuses on pushing the boundaries of wood. Consisting of just five pieces, the new series is the result of meticulous exploration into the material, which has seen the studio apply its typically experimental and deeply researched approach.
“[Through our work], we generally reflect our thoughts on how cabinet making conventions can be challenged, and moulded into something that excites us in the moment,” says SNICKERIET’s Karl-Johan Hjerling. “We always try to capture ideas as bare-bone as possible and strive to minimise any sense of the work being contemporary.”
Strata, a cabinet made from oak, features manipulated wood grain patterns in a bid to create a design that sits somewhere between the natural and man made. Layers of oak, which have been veneered at an angle, are sanded down to create a textured look inspired by veins on sedimentary rock.
Using a combination of glass and cedar, a table named Posit sees a glass table top satisfyingly slid on top of a snug base, while a bookcase named Kontra makes use of linoleum, and has an ultra matte surface that feels like leather to touch.
The two final pieces in the collection are the Trilit stool and Pilast side table. For Trilit, a bulbous form was created through simple-looking wood joints that connect three pieces of Douglas fir, creating what the designers describe as “seeming upholstered or inflated”. Pilast is the only piece in the collection to not be made from wood, and instead uses a stone composite material. However, in keeping with the woodworking concept, techniques typically reserved for working with wood have been applied to the construction of the stool, namely traditional wood bending. “The result looks as if carved from marble, but a closer inspection reveals an unexpected precision in both material and shape,” the designers say.
While SNICKERIET chose to focus on wood for this new collection, London studio CAN developed a new material it dubbed “rubber rock” for a new series of marble-like tables named Liquid Geology.
