Detailed Look of the Nike Dunk Low "Setsubun"

Every year, folks of Japanese descent will celebrate the Setsubun — the first day of Spring in the Asian country’s old calendar and an annual festival that is designed to rid of bad fortune and spirits of the previous year. It’s often referred to as the “Bean-Throwing Festival” given that those that participate will toss out roasted soybeans out of their door or towards relatives that are adorned in demon masks. While the 2022 festivities have now passed, Nike is still honoring this annual tradition by releasing a special Dunk Low “Setsubun” colorway, and it’s just been revealed by way of official imagery.

You can capture the essence of the holiday through the shoe’s various details. Tsuno Daishi, the Great Horned Master — a figure that is believed to protect from sickness and evil — is highlighted on the lateral heel through purple embroidery, and his horns have been substituted with Nike Swooshes. If you slip out the insoles, you’ll notice that artwork from Utagawa Kuniyoshi is plastered on them in all-over fashion. It features his “Kintoki Throwing Beans at Fleeing Demon” piece that displays the folk hero Kintarō. Elsewhere on the kicks, the kicks are prepared with toe boxes and quarters that have cobblestone-like patterns, double stacked purple and brown Swooshes and dark brown overlays.

An official release date hasn’t been announced just yet, but it’s likely that Nike could be launching the pair in the coming weeks.
