Moncler Debuts Maya 70 Jacket by Pharrell Williams
The seventh and final entry in the brand’s ‘Maya 70 Collaborations.’
Honoring Moncler’s 70th anniversary, the Italian label has launched the Moncler Maya 70 Collaborations: a series of reinterpretations of its classic Maya jacket by seven industry-shifting designers. Among them, Pharrell Williams has crafted a sleek iteration of the silhouette, out November 26.
Marking the seventh and final launch in the series, Pharrell transforms the Italian down jacket with his signature, inventive design ethos. To start, the visionary revitalizes the coat with a molded polymeric material, providing the silhouette with a smooth, black surface area; to finish, he dots the entire jacket with miniature, three-dimensional logo branding.
“How do you define the last 70 years? Getting to design the iconic Maya jacket with my own twist was a total honor. I knew from the beginning I wanted it to be all rubber,” says Pharrell, who selected rapper and singer Tobe Nwigwe to wear his design in Moncler’s campaign. “I’m a huge fan of Tobe, and the way he combines music and fashion to make his own unique style. He’s the only person I know that could rock a rubber jacket and make it look even better.”
A trailblazing recording artist, producer, songwriter, philanthropist and entrepreneur, Pharrell assumes many more titles than just “designer.” But in fashion, the visionary is most known for his label Billionaire Boys Club, which he founded with Nigo in 2003. Positioned comfortably at the intersection of streetwear and luxury, the brand has since achieved global recognition for its clothing, accessories and lifestyle offerings. And as it has evolved over almost two decades, BBC has expanded to create its own universe, with several inspired labels including ICECREAM, Bee Line and Billionaire Girls Club.
Aside from Pharrell, Moncler has enlisted Thom Browne, Hiroshi Fujiwara for FRGMT, Pierpaolo Piccioli, Francesco Ragazzi for Palm Angels, Giambattista Valli and Rick Owens for Maya 70 recreations.
The Moncler Maya 70 by Pharrell Williams will release at select Moncler stores and on Moncler’s website on November 26. Take a look at the celebratory silhouette above.
