Serena Williams has joined Sorare, a player-owned NFT fantasy sports platform, as an advisor to its board of directors.

The tennis star will be advising the company on its expansion into women’s sports, developing relationships with athletes worldwide and how to make forthcoming web3 initiatives inclusive and diverse.

Since its founding in 2018, Sorare has garnered 1 million users and 230 partnering sports organizations. Last year, the company logged $325 million USD in trading volume. Sorare users manage a virtual team fantasy sports team through purchasing, selling and trading digital player cards.

“NFTs have the potential to be a powerful tool for bringing equity and investment to women’s sports,” Williams said in a press release. “I’m excited to start working alongside [Sorare CEO] Nicolas and the team because they understand the relationship between athletes and fans unlike anyone else in the category, and I believe Sorare will be setting the culture and tone of the future of sports entertainment.”

In other sports news, Lonzo Ball is out for six to eight weeks due to knee surgery.
