Our Legacy's Fall 2022 Collection Wants You to Have Fun at Work

Presenting formalwear that’s skewed by the imagination of a child.

For many luxury brands, Fall 2022 served as a time to look back — Kim Jones’ Dior did such a thing with its schoolboy-ish undertones, JUUN.J transported us to the jet setting lifestyle of the 1960’s elite, and Louis Vuitton reflected on Virgil Abloh’s archive — but for Christopher Nyung and Jokum Hallin’s Swedish imprint Our Legacy, it’s speaking on something more familiar to us all: returning back to the office in our new-normal world.

Taking traditional formalwear cues and subverting them is the typical approach, but that’s not the Our Legacy way. Instead, it views perceived positions of authority through the gaze of a child. For Fall 2022, Our Legacy imagines a “child’s idea of the uniform, of its teacher, of a banker, a parent going to dinner, an office worker commuting,” and the result is a roster of wardrobe staples that have been distorted and contemporized.

When a child sees a suit, it’s imagined to be uncomfortable and restricting. This is echoed by Our Legacy’s blazer which is pinched and puckered at the waist, almost like a corset, while the idea of an old suit that doesn’t fit has been elegantly translated with its elongated blazer overcoat, sporting a concealed button that gives the jacket a squeezed effect as it fastens.

Elsewhere, casual work outfits that pair a cardigan over a shirt (sans tie) are worn with skirts designed with men in mind, while traditional formal outfits are updated in high-gloss leather. The shirt-and-tie combination is reworked into a vest, accented by a tie clip but no tie once more, while this season’s trend of untucked shirts frequently appears in the lookbook as another nod to unconventional office attire.

There are plenty more references, but particular standouts include the gray cardigan and popped-collar look that’s worn with slouchy pants, as if you were too comfortable working from home but need to go to the office, and in the other direction, Our Legacy also presents a stellar array of puffy outerwear, luxurious overcoats, utilitarian pants, and a breadth of sweaters and knits.

Speaking on the collection, Cristopher Nying, the Creative Director of Our Legacy, said: “I had this roughed up conservative style queued up, having a child in mind, looking up to the authority, feeling small… It’s one step into evergreen dressing and a foot in conservative classics, styles that are a bit ‘punctured,’ tweaked, and skewed — and also keeping the fine balance between an original occasional wardrobe. Then, some of these styles went into a more kind of distressed office style. Using the most simple wool cardigan with a leather shirt and raw kilt, large overcoats overcropped polo or large popover shirt. Creating a minimalistic take on this, lack of ties with only the tie clip left, banking shirts in huge proportions, high twist fabrics in simply constructed tailoring, rough tartans, raw velvet, distressed tuxedos, over-dyed knitwear. I’ve been living with a desire to change this authoritarian dressing with today’s view, why not wear a tuxedo jacket with cargo pants and a kilt wrapped, with heels for both men and women, always.”

Take a look at the Fall 2022 collection from Our Legacy above, and expect it to land in stores, online, and at select stockists worldwide later this year.
