The first series of the Medieval-set fantasy drama followed a mutated monster-hunter named Geralt, portrayed by Henry Cavill, on his quests throughout an eerie landmass deemed “the Continent.” The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will serve as a prequel to the live-action series, delving into the origin story of Geralt’s mentor Vesemir, a young witcher, and how monster hunters like him are created. Played by Kim Bodnia, Vesemir will also appear in the live-action series’s second season.
The trailer follows a shorter teaser released last month and previews a compilation of fight scenes and encounters with new supernatural monsters.
The spinoff comes from Studio Mir, which animated most of the Avatar spinoff The Legend of Korra, along with titles such as Dota: Dragon’s Blood and The Death of Superman. Beau DeMayo, who wrote the third episode of the live-action series, serves as the film’s writer and producer.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf comes to Netflix on August 23. The second season of The Witcher live-action series will premiere on December 17.
