Bulgari Aluminium GMT Hints at a Return to International Travel

Bulgari designer moves GMT ring inside in a break with tradition.

Bulgari’s lightweight sports watch, the Bulgari Aluminium, has been given colorful, travel-friendly upgrade with the addition of a GMT complication.

Once second only to chronographs in terms of popularity, GMT watches took a backseat during lockdown as international travel was put on hold, but now seem to be making a tentative comeback.

Rather than transpose the traditional day/night 24-hour GMT ring onto the Bulgari Aluminium GMT’s blue rubber bezel, Bulgari’s chief watch designer Fabrizio Buonamassa opted to add a red and blue “Pepsi” chapter ring with a red, arrow-tipped pointer indicating GMT.

The watch uses a B192 automatic calibre with a 42-hour power reserve and adjusting both the GMT pointer and local time is handled using the crown.

With its 40mm aluminium case, titanium caseback and rubber strap, the Bulgari Aluminium has always been a solid contender for a travel-focused watch in terms of comfort. The Italian jewelry and watch brand latched onto this when they launched the model in 1998, decking out Alitalia’s Boeing 747 fleet with a bare metal livery showing the watch wrapped around the fuselage.

The Bulgari Aluminium GMT is available now via Bulgari, priced $3,500 USD.
