New 'Free Guy' Trailer Shows Ryan Reynolds Fighting to Save a Virtual World
Ryan plays a background character turned hero.
Twentieth Century Fox released a new trailer on Thursday for their upcoming action-comedy film Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Shawn Levy.
The movie centers around an open-world video game where Reynolds stars as Guy, a non-playable character. Once Guy learns that he only exists in a video game, he decides to join in and become the hero of his own story. He can’t die, so why not?
In the new trailer, Guy’s awakening comes at the hands of Molotov Girl, played by Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer, who reveals that he’s different than everyone else in the game. The two team up to save their virtual world with support from Buddy, a sidekick played by Lil Rel Howery.
The film also stars Taika Waititi, Joe Keery and Utkarsh Ambudkar, and some of the gaming world’s most influential figures make cameos, including Imane “Pokimane” Anys, Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott, Seán William “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Daniel “DanTDM” Middleton.
Originally slated to arrive in 2020, the release date had been pushed back multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the film opens in theaters nationwide August 13.
