Maison Margiela’s Fusion Sneaker proved to be a huge success for the brand, but very little has happened for the silhouette since late 2019. Now, the luxury label is back with its latest offering, the Patchwork Sneaker — no, not the ones that came out in 2017 as that was more of a reworked Replica — but an all-new style that continues on from the divisive Fusion.
At first glance, the Patchwork Sneaker looks like a streamlined and revised version of the Fusion. However, there’s a lot more to it than just a few messy glue marks. The upper is made from a mixed material base, seeing black tape wrap over the toe box and a gray mesh textile work its way all around the shoe as the under layer. On top of this, you’ll find black suede on the eyestay, worn white leather on the mid-panel, light blue worn leather around the collar, and patches of black suede placed on the shoe’s lateral-rear quarter.
Another tab of tape can be found decorating the heel, which sits alongside dirtied cream mesh that houses the signature Maison Margiela single stitch on the heel. Rounding out the sneaker is the unmissable sole unit, which is comprised of a single white rubber unit that’s covered in black paintbrush marks and bright orange gunky glue.
